Mile Marker 14: Not So Wordless Wednesday

As I've mentioned before, I haven't had the chance to photograph any baby babies (the first 6 months of life).  As I've also mentioned before, my husband and I have started going to a life group at our church.  It just so happens that the couple that hosts the life group just had a baby a little over a month ago.  Even though I don't know her all that well yet, I decided to ask her if I could come take some pictures of her precious baby.

I'll be honest, I was stressing just a little bit leading up to it.  I don't have a collection of props.  Being that I've never done a baby shoot before and that I don't have any children of my own, I don't really know anything about baby temperaments.  This was a total learning experience!

Thankfully, mom over there, was super laid back.  I'm really happy with what I got (especially for my first baby photo shoot).

Mile Marker 12: Selfies

Heres the thing...I have NO problem with "selfies".  I think that people feel drop dead, smokin' hot, fabulously gorgeous in all those selfies that they post...aaaaaand I post them myself.

Today, I was supposed to have 2 photo shoots, but one of them had something come up and they had to reschedule.  :)  ...at least they rescheduled, right?

I'm fairly new to the whole "running a photography business" thing, so I'm pretty flexible.  I've been doing freelance work for about a year and a half now.  I absolutely love it!

This afternoon, because my second shoot canceled, I had some extra time to kill.  (my next statement is going to make your jaw drop) Until two days ago, I didn't own a tripod.  I had a monopod, but no tripod.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I recently purchased a light kit.  Since then, I have wanted to take some nice personal photos.  Strangely enough, my husband makes me super nervous behind the camera.  He makes faces, no direction, and I get uncomfortable.  Needless to say, the pictures turn out disgusting. (I'm not very photogenic.)

Since I had some time and now a tripod, I went to taking some personal photos.  Here are my favorites!

I can't usually rock the serious face...but I don't think I completely butchered it here.

I don't have the biggest studio space.  Right now I just use an extra bedroom upstairs hence the majority of close ups.

Thanks for stopping by!

Linda

Mile Marker 4: Learning New Skills

So, this year, my husband and I got a good size tax return.  I like to think it was mostly thanks to me because I was still in college last year… ;)

But in all honesty, we both worked hard last year, and I feel we deserve the return.

What is exciting about the tax return is that we got to pay off all of our “little” debts which results in us saving over $100/mo in payments!  The biggest of our “little” debts was a substantial amount that my husbands parents had let us borrow when we purchased our house.  I am SO grateful for their help, but I am SO happy that we have paid them back.

We did have some extra money after paying those things off, so I was able to invest in my little freelance business with some new equipment. (In order to save money, I opted for the slowest shipping possible and am still waiting for one more package…ugh! Patience, I need to learn patience.)

First off, I bought a speed light (flash)!  I can’t want to start using it for indoor photography and weddings!

My friend Fern modeled for me!
I still have lots to learn about indoor photography, but now I have one of the tools I can use to help me learn.

Next, I bought a 3 light, light kit with umbrella diffusers.

My new light kit!
I am so excited to start experimenting with studio work, especially newborn photography!  If you have a newborn and would like to help me expand my portfolio, comment below or contact me via my website.  http://www.hotphilosophy.net

My husband posing for me with our new puppy Molly!

My husband is hot!

I still have so much to learn, backdrops and props to buy, and a portfolio to build…but I’m happy with my humble beginnings! :)

Linda
